CFSA Out of Country Accident Insurance

"The CSA is wiling to relax its out-of-country accident insurance policy for Lake Placid only, but strongly recommends all participants have the Class 2B accident and medical insurance for Lake Placid.  Although the Class 2B insurance is not mandatory for the Lake Placid water ramp, all parents should be very aware the costs of medical care and any potential helicopter evacuation (for example, serious life threatening injuries) is very high in the USA.  While water ramping is reasonably safe, serious accidents can happen.  All of your parents should review their excess medical and accident insurance policies and make sure inverted areials performed on a water ramp are included in the coverage and not written into the excluded activities section and considered a high risk activity.  The Class 2B excess medical and accident insurance will provide insurance for any medical and accident expenses, with the stated limitations and payment maximums, for these higher risk activities.  I have attached a list of the benefits for your information.  Please note that for any training on-snow that is outside of Canada, out-of-country excess medical insurance coverage is mandatory (i.e. Class 2B)."

NCD Freestyle to Offer Three Ramp Camps at Lake Placid for 2008
Though it seems like only yesterday that we were skiing (and should still be skiing with all the snow we have received this April!), it is now time to start planning the 2008 Summer NCD Freestyle ramp camp sessions at the Olympic Training Facility in Lake Placid, New York.

The weekends are as follows: June 21st/22nd; August 16th/17th; and September 6th/7th (assuming there are sufficient registrations for each).

Training is conducted by qualified CFSA and NCCP Level II Air coaches and will include water ramp and trampoline. All trampolines are equipped with safety harnesses, and one has a bungy rig. The ramp surface has plastic bristles and the athletes will be going around 30-40 km/h off the jump. These camps are open to all skiers, however, it is recommended that all those candidates interested in trying out for one of the 2008-09 Fortune Freestyle, Calabogie Freestyle and NCD Freestyle teams will participate. Registration forms with full details will be posted at this site approximately 6-8 weeks in advance of each camp.

For further information contact: Jon Perry at j_w_perry@hotmail.com or Jack Perry at jackperry@canada.com.

Calabogie Peaks Freestyle Club Introduction Day March 8, 2008
Twenty three children signed up for the March 8th, Calabogie Peaks Freestyle Club Intro Day spear headed by Bruce Chick. Unfortunately, due to severe road and weather conditions several parents reluctantly called to cancel, however 11 budding freestylers still made it for the day and they all ended the day with big smiles on their faces.

The conditions were incredible and everyone was very enthusiastic about the day. Many parents also commented that there is a lot of positive buzz around Calabogie Peaks about this new program and expect there will be many kids looking forward to join for next season.

There also has been a lot of interest expressed by the 14+ years age group so hopefully there will be sufficient demand to create a program for that age group.

Calabogie parents have also expressed an interest in learning how to ski the bumps and asked if there was a program for them. Hopefully a couple of half-day clinics can be set up for interested parents in the future.

Bruce Chick would like to thank the wonderful staff at Calabogie for helping to get this program up and running - Don Swift Snow School Director; Jamie Riopelle, Director of Operations; Tess and Steve our newest Club Coaches from the Calabogie Snow School; Nicole Angus, Calabogie’s Website expert and Darrin Ullerick, President & CFO Calabogie Peaks Resort.

Thanks also go out to Rafael Guembes for all his vision, help and technical support, Julie Steggal for her help and support and Jeff Bean for coming out to ski with the kids for the day!

Many thanks to RBC and Kevin Pigeon at Tommy & Lefebvre for the supplying great stuff for the kids at the end of the day.

And finally thanks to Bruce Chick for all his effort in making this introduction to freestyle a huge success.

Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort to introduce freestyle skiing for 2008/09 Season
Under the guidance of Bruce Chick former World Cup Freestyle Ski competitor, Calabogie Ski Resort plans to introduce a Jumps & Bumps Program for the 2008/09 Season.

Starting this winter/spring, Rafael Guembes who ran the Southern Alberta development program and recently moved to Stittsville has agreed to join in building this new club and will look after coach training and all on-hill programs. While this new B&J program won’t get into full operation until next season, Rafael will run a short 2-day March Break camp this season, March 8th & 9th, as a kick-off event.

Jeff Bean will also be on hand Saturday March 8th to give a demonstration. The goal of this event is to get kids excited about freestyle and hopefully sign up for the program next season.

For athletes looking to get certified as a club coach, Rafael will be holding a coaching clinic during the first week of March. Calabogie’s ski school has a few CSIA Park & Pipe instructors who are planning to get their CFSA Club Coach certification this spring.

NCD Freestyle Invitation to Competive Team Tryouts and Pre-Season Training
The National Capital Freestyle Skiing Association is currently selecting athletes to train for the National Capital Regional Competitive Team for 2007/08. This year we will have a tryout and conditioning camp October through December. Athletes will be invited to tryout for the Park and Pipe Team. We are also extending the invitation to those that would like a Competitive Mogul Team, however we will need at least six competitors to run this program. Attached please find the invitation and registration form.

The program intent is to field a competitive team starting in January. Our fall objective is to coach, mentor and develop the athletes with on snow and dry land training (pray for snow). The first few sessions will concentrate on dry land (for obvious reasons). It will focus on conditioning and helping the athletes and coaches get to know each other. On snow training will begin as soon as Sauveur or any of the local resorts have sufficient snow.

Please note that we cannot hard code a schedule for on snow training as it is weather dependent. If the snow is available we make every attempt to make use of it. If it is not then we do not substitute it with off snow training. In other words we could be scheduled for training days; however, they may be rescheduled rather quickly due to the weather. We are a weather dependent sport therefore it can be difficult to schedule training and take advantage of the weather, so please be flexible so that we can get the most out or the training program.

All registered athletes will be assessed for their competitive skills. The idea is to field athletes that can compete at the level expected and not be humiliated at various competitions. The coaches will make the final decision regarding who makes the competitive team. Athletes who do not display the skills necessary but do have the attitude necessary will be offered a developmental position on the team however they may not be allowed to compete at competitions that require a higher level of skill (coach’s discretion).

Also a note for parents. The NCD (NCR) board of directors is sadly lacking active parents whose children are in our programs. NCD has a proud past; training many athletes that progressed to provincial and national teams, as well as professionally into magazines and major events such as the X-Games. We hope NCD Freestyle will continue to have such success. I strongly urge the parents to get actively involved to make the season a fun and huge success! I hope I have answered some of your questions and feel free to contact Jon Stern at jon@jrekautocare.com me at any time.

Calabogie Slopestyle
On March 17 NCD Freestyle hosted a slopestyle competition for skiers and snowboarders at Calabogie just west of Ottawa. Rockstars like Bryan Snow and Scott Lemay showed up to throw down some solid runs to earn them 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the competition. Snowboarders such as Brandon Davidson also put down solid performances. Congrats to all the athletes, and special thanks to the sponsors (T&L, Orage, Bytek Auto, Martin Sound, Head), the volunteers, and especially Jon Stern, the chief of competition, who made it all happen.

With that the 2007 ski season for NCD Freestyle officially wraps up. It was an action-packed one that the coaches and athletes won't soon forget. Keep checking in with the Web site for more updates over the summer for things like ramp camps. Enjoy the spring ski season!!

2007 Ontario Provincial Freestyle Skiing Championships
Camp Fortune and the Fortune Freestyle Club played host to the 2007 Ontario Provincial Freestyle Skiing Championships February 17 and 18. The event was a huge success, thanks to the volunteers, Camp Fortune, sponsors and some sunny weather.

Skiers from across Ontario, from Thunder Bay to Ottawa, competed in two events: big air (Feb. 17) and moguls (Feb. 18). For full results, please go to the Results Page where they are posted.

There were a few local skiers who skied exceptionally well and deserve special mention. Winning the juvenile mens' big air was Bryan Snow, with a textbook fakie rodeo 720 mute grab. Bryan also stomped a fakie rodeo 540 in the mogul competition. Taking home the silver in the juvenile mens' big air was Mack Jones, who executed beautifully a cork 720 truck driver. Also of NCD Freestyle and on the podium was Max Morello, who took home the silver medal in the youth mens' big air event. Honourable mention also goes out to Cameron Marcus who jumped and skied solidly all weekend, just finishing outside the medals in both moguls (6th) and big air (5th). On the moguls side, comeback kid Jon Perry put down a solid second run to take home the gold medal in the adult mens' category, while Alex Pilon had a solid 7th place in youth mens moguls. Lastly, congrats to Fortune Freestyle's Maude Potvin-Gilbert for taking home the gold medal in the juvenile ladies' moguls competition.

For full pictures of the event, don't forget to check out Keenan Sports Photography.

Congratulations to all of the athletes, and thanks again to our volunteers, Camp Fortune and our sponsors, including official sponsors Canada Post and National Bank Financial, for making what was a wonderful weekend of freestyle skiing competition.

Ontario Provincial Championships at Camp Fortune
The Ontario Provincial Championships are returning to Camp Fortune this February 17 and 18, 2007. Many of you may recall the 2005 competition, which was a huge success. No doubt 2007's will be just as great.

Come out and support the top freestylers in Ontario, and cheer on the local skiers in both the big air (Saturday) and moguls (Sunday) events on Clifford at Camp Fortune. If you are an athlete interested in competing yourself, then please refer to the REGISTRATION FORM as soon as possible, as there is a February 10th deadline. Good luck to all!!

NCD Freestyle Teams' First Competitions of 2007
Saturday, January 27th the NCD Freestyle Competitive teams participated in their first competitions of the year – with great results!

Two of our mogul competitors, Alexander Pilon and Aaron Zambonin, competed at the Horseshoe Valley regional mogul event in Southern Ontario. Alex placed 3rd in his category, winning the bronze medal and Aaron finished 8th in his category. A great showing, especially given the team’s limited training time due to lack of snow!!

The NCD Freestyle Competitive Park and Pipe team headed to Calabogie Ski Resort to compete in the local rail jam. In spite of frigid temperatures, this team showed they were ready!! The top 4 spots in a field of approximately 15 skiers went to the NCD team. Bryan Snow finished 1st, Mack Jones 2nd, Maxim Morello 3rd and Connor Fitzpatrick finished 4th, 1 point short of 3rd spot.

Congratulations to all our competitive skiers on such a good showing.

Let it snow!!

NCD Tryout and Conditioning Program Update
Good news!!!!! We have recruited 4 more mogul skiers which will now allow us to go forward with a competitive mogul team. We now have try outs for 5 Park & Pipe Team, 6 Mogul Team and 1 trying out for either team.

The fall/winter program is now full, training started two weeks ago and all feedback so far is very positive. We are asking that if the athletes cannot make any of the sessions scheduled, please advise the coaches. Responsibility is part of being on a high performance team.

Level I Official’s Course

Attention all Parents and NCD and Fortune Freestyle members of the board: NCD Freestyle Skiing Association will be hosting a Level I Officials Course on Saturday December 2nd, 2006. It will run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM and will be instructed by John Pomeroy of the CFSA and will be held at Enbridge at the East side of Ottawa. This course is designed to equip any volunteers with the information necessary to help them understand the roles of officials (volunteers), what they should do and how to run events. This should be particularly helpful since Fortune Freestyle will be hosting Provincials this year, however it is also meant for regional and local events such as the bump off. Everyone is welcome however I would like to have an RSVP so that I know the numbers and in case we have to cut it off due to size. A course outline is provided and directions are provided below. At this point the charges will be covered by NCD but depending on expenses we may have to throw a bit into the pot for refreshments and pizza (to be determined). Thank you to Remo (Zambonin) for providing the location.

Please refer to the Course Summary for more information.

RSVP PLEASE. Hope to see you there - Jack Perry National Capital Division Freestyle Skiing Association

Directions for Officials course: Enbridge Facility, 400 Coventry Rd, Ottawa. There is parking in the back and you enter by the back door. Officials course is from 9:30 - 4:00, December 2nd. Take the HWY-417 to RIVERSIDE DRIVE exit toward VANIER PARKWAY (LEFT onto RIVERSIDE DR / VANIER PKWY. Continue to follow VANIER PKWY north. Turn RIGHT onto COVENTRY RD. End at 400 Coventry Road.

Fall 2006
Dry-Land Training Schedule for NCD Freestyle Competitive Team Try-Outs
NCD/NCR is holding three dry land training and conditioning sessions during the month of October for those athletes trying out for the National Capital Region Competitive Team. More sessions are being planned for November and if we get really lucky perhaps some will be on snow.

These sessions are being coached by Jon Stern, Adam Stern and Jon Perry.

1. Oct. 14 (12pm-3pm) @ Merivale Public School: be prepared to go rain or shine; bring water and a light snack

2. Oct. 21 ( 1pm-4:30) @ Carleton University Pool: be prepared to warm up outside first with some soccer; athletes will be able to practice tricks off diving board.

3. Oct. 28 (10am-1:30pm) @ Meet at Camp Fortune on Skyline side: be prepared to hike; bring lunch and water

Fall 2006
NCD Freestyle Announces Competitive Team Try-Outs
NCD (NCR) Freestyle revamped its program to select and train athletes for the National Capital Regional Competitive Team for 2006/07. This year we will have a tryout and conditioning camp October through December. Athletes will be invited to tryout for either a Mogul Team or a Park and Pipe Team. We have finally received all of the registrations and are putting the fall/Xmas schedule in place. The newly designed program is resulting in some growing pains as things can get quite confusing and difficult for volunteers to organize in between our daily commitments and our employment; however, everything seems to be falling in place.

To sum up, we had hoped to field both a mogul team and a park and pipe team at the NCD (NCR) competitive level. The good news is that there are sufficient athletes to field an air team; however, the bad news is that we will not be able to run a competitive mogul team this year because of insufficient numbers. So if there are mogul skiers out there who want to be in a competitive program, we only need 2 or 3 to get the mogul program on the road and still might be able to throw it together.

The program's intent is to field a competitive team starting in January, therefore our fall objective is to coach, mentor and develop the athletes with on snow and dry land training (pray for snow). The first few sessions will concentrate on dry land (for obvious reasons). It will focus on conditioning and helping the athletes and coaches get to know each other. On snow training will begin as soon as Sauveur or Fortune has sufficient snow. We are a weather dependent sport and so there is not much choice. It is difficult at times, but please be flexible so that we can maximize our coaching.

Regarding “making” the competitive team; the idea is to field athletes that can compete at the level expected and not be humiliated at various competitions. The coaches will make the final decision regarding who makes the competitive team. Athletes who do not display the skills necessary but do have the attitude necessary will be offered a developmental position on the team however they may not be allowed to compete at competitions that require a higher level of skill (coach’s discretion).

The NCD (NCR) board of directors is sadly lacking active parents whose children are in our programs, so once you get your feet wet please attend our spring AGM and make the program work for you. NCD has a proud past; training many athletes that progressed to provincial and national teams, as well as professionally into magazines and major events such as the X-Games. We hope NCD Freestyle will continue to have such success. I strongly urge the parents to get actively involved to make the season a fun and huge success! I hope I have answered some of your questions and feel free to contact me at any time. For more information on the try-outs, please go here.

Have a great season! --Jack Perry
